Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 15, 2026
- Everything — audio, transcripts, summaries, moods, your graph — is stored on your iPhone only.
- Transcription and AI reflections run on-device with Apple's frameworks. Your entries are never sent to us or anyone else.
- There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no trackers.
- We operate no servers for your diary. We couldn't read it if we wanted to.
1. Who we are
Echo is an audio diary app for iPhone. For any privacy question, contact us at hi@echodiary.dev.
2. What Echo stores — and where
When you record an entry, Echo saves on your device:
- Audio recordings of your entries.
- Transcripts, produced on-device by Apple's speech frameworks.
- Summaries, titles and reflections, produced on-device by Apple Intelligence.
- Moods and emotions you log after an entry.
- Your knowledge graph: the topics, people and places Echo detects in what you say, and how they connect.
- Onboarding answers (your name, goals and journaling preferences), used only to personalize reflections.
All of it lives in the app's local database on your iPhone. None of it is transmitted to us.
3. What leaves your device
Nothing, in normal use. Echo has no backend, no user accounts and no analytics SDKs. We do not collect usage data, crash reports tied to you, advertising identifiers or your location.
One thing you control: if your iPhone backs up to iCloud or your computer, Echo's data may be included in that backup like any other app's. Backups are governed by Apple's privacy policy and your iOS settings.
4. Microphone and speech recognition
Echo asks for microphone access the first time you record, and only listens while a recording is in progress. Speech is transcribed with Apple's on-device speech frameworks; audio is not sent to Apple's servers for transcription.
5. Apple Intelligence
Entry titles, summaries, topic detection and reflections are generated by Apple's on-device foundation models. Your words are processed on your iPhone's own hardware. If your device or language doesn't support Apple Intelligence, those features simply stay off — your recordings and transcripts still work.
6. Retention and deletion
Your data stays until you delete it:
- Delete any single entry from the app — its audio, transcript and graph mentions go with it.
- Deleting the app deletes everything Echo stored on the device.
- Data inside your own iCloud or local backups is yours to manage through iOS.
7. Your rights
Privacy laws like the GDPR grant rights over personal data — access, correction, deletion, portability. Because your diary never reaches us, exercising them never requires asking us: everything is already in your hands, on your device.
8. Children
Echo is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country), and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone — children included.
9. Changes
If Echo ever adds a feature that changes what data is handled — for example, optional sync — we will update this policy and make the change obvious in the app before it applies.
